Dr. Corinne Votaw-Freer, psychologist and gender dysphoria specialist in Orange County
PsyD Doctoral-Level
Psychologist

Hi, I'm Corinne.

“Gender is one of the most personal things a person can bring into a room. My job is not to steer you anywhere. It is to help you see yourself clearly.”

I'm a psychologist with more than ten years of experience, and my clinical background includes work at an LGBT center. Gender identity is a focus of my practice, not a box I checked on a directory. I work with children, teens, and adults, with the process adapted to age, and I have sat with people at every point on this road: the first time the question gets said out loud, the years of weighing, the decisions, and the life that continues after them. For kids and teens, that includes the parents, who are usually carrying their own version of the same questions.

My doctoral training is in assessment and diagnosis, and that matters more here than almost anywhere else in therapy. Dysphoria rarely travels alone. Depression, anxiety, trauma, and plain human doubt all tangle into the same knot, and careful work means seeing each thread for what it is. You deserve a clear picture, not a script.

Does any of this sound familiar?

People come to gender-focused therapy from very different places. A few of the ones I hear most often:

If any of that lands, you're in the right place. None of it is too early, too late, or too uncertain to bring to a first call.

Clarity first. Everything else follows.

Some of this work is about the questions themselves. Some of it is about building a life around the answers. Both belong in the room.

💬

Exploration & Clarity

Sorting out what you feel and what it means, at your pace, with no pressure toward any conclusion. Questioning is a starting point here, never a problem

🌿

Living With Dysphoria

Day-to-day coping: body image, mirrors and photos, social situations, dating, and the exhaustion of managing all of it while the rest of life keeps going

🧭

Decisions & Transitions

Thinking through social or medical steps, timing, workplaces, and family conversations with someone who knows the terrain. The decisions stay yours

👪

Kids, Teens & Parents

Age-adapted work for children and teens, with parents involved as partners. Support for the whole family while a young person figures things out

💼

Everything Around It

Anxiety, depression, trauma, school, relationships, work. Gender is rarely the only thing going on, and the rest deserves real treatment too

A word about what specialist means here. It does not mean I have a destination picked out for you, in either direction. It means I know this territory well enough that you never have to educate me, and my assessment training helps untangle dysphoria from the depression, anxiety, and trauma that often sit beside it. I do not practice conversion therapy or anything resembling it, in any form, for anyone, at any age.

Downtown Santa Ana, or your own living room

Finding a therapist in Orange County who genuinely knows gender dysphoria should not require a drive to Los Angeles or Long Beach. You have two options, and the care is the same in both.

In Person

Downtown Santa Ana office

A quiet, private office in downtown Santa Ana, central enough that most of the county is a short drive rather than a freeway expedition. No waiting room crowd, no clinic bustle, and no guesswork about whether the person inside is safe to talk to.

Online

Or meet entirely from home

Sessions run over a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform, available anywhere in California. You need a computer or phone with a camera, a stable connection, and a room where you can speak freely. For children, a parent stays nearby to help with setup.

For some people, that last part decides it. If you are not out at home or need privacy from roommates or family, we can talk through options on the consultation call. A parked car with good wifi has hosted more therapy than you might think.

Serving children, teens, adults, and their families across Orange County: Santa Ana, Orange, Tustin, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Anaheim, Garden Grove, Fullerton, Westminster, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Long Beach borders, Villa Park, Yorba Linda, Placentia, Brea, Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, and the surrounding communities.

From first call to ongoing work

Starting therapy is its own hurdle, so here is exactly what happens, step by step.

1

Free 15-Minute Consultation

We talk about what's going on and what you're hoping therapy will do. You get a feel for how I work, and I tell you honestly whether I'm the right fit. If I'm not, I'll point you toward someone who is. No commitment, and nothing to prepare.

2

Before Your First Session

I send intake paperwork through a secure portal, which you complete online at your own pace. It asks about your history and what brings you in. Share what you're ready to share. The rest can wait until we've built some trust.

3

Your First Session

We go deeper on the story and the goals, in person in Santa Ana or online. For children and teens, I meet with parents in depth and with the young person at a level that fits their age. For adults, the session is yours. Either way, you set the pace on anything sensitive, and by the end you'll have a sense of what we're working toward.

4

Ongoing Work, Reviewed Together

Most people start with weekly sessions, and we adjust the rhythm together as things change. We check in on progress regularly, because therapy should be moving you somewhere, not just filling a calendar slot.

The ground rules, stated plainly

You should not have to guess how a therapist will treat you. Here is what you can count on in this office, in writing, before you ever book a call.

Straightforward rates, discussed up front

You'll know exactly what therapy costs before you commit to anything. We go over rates, payment options, and any insurance questions on the free consultation call, so there is nothing unexpected later.

Clear, simple billing

No sign-up fees, no cancellation traps, and no surprise invoices. Just a straightforward per-session rate we discuss before you begin.

Rates quoted before you start
HSA and FSA funds accepted
Superbill for out-of-network reimbursement
Secure online payment

If you are experiencing financial hardship, please reach out anyway. I am glad to discuss options. Full details are on my Rates & Insurance page.

Why see a specialist for this, specifically

What a psychologist brings to gender dysphoria work

Plenty of therapists list gender identity among a dozen specialties, and no one verifies it. This work asks more than good intentions. It asks for real familiarity with how dysphoria presents across a lifetime, and for the diagnostic training to tell it apart from the depression, anxiety, and trauma that so often arrive with it, or masquerade as it.

My doctoral training covered assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment, and my clinical background includes work at an LGBT center. You get both: a psychologist's rigor and a therapist who has done this exact work with this community, not adjacent to it.

No educating your own therapist

Session time is expensive, and you should spend none of it defining terms, justifying yourself, or bracing for a bad reaction. We start at the part that's yours.

Is online therapy as good as in person?

For most people, yes. The research on telehealth therapy outcomes is strong, and the conversations are the same ones. Some people speak more freely from their own space, especially about something this personal. Choose whichever setting works, and switch if your needs change.

Before you book

Do I have to want to transition to work with you?

No. Some clients pursue transition, some decide against it, some land somewhere in between, and many arrive with no idea yet. All of those are legitimate places to start and legitimate places to end up. The work is figuring out what is true for you, not arriving at a particular answer.

Do you work with children and teens, or only adults?

All three, with the process adapted to age. For minors, a parent or guardian consents to treatment and stays involved as a partner in the work. Teens also get room to speak freely, with the boundaries of that privacy agreed on together at the start, so nobody is surprised later. The same ground rules apply at every age: patience, no steering, and no conversion therapy in any form.

Will you push me toward, or away from, transition?

Neither. I don't have a script for your outcome. My role is to help you see your own experience clearly, think through decisions with full information, and treat whatever else is going on alongside the gender questions. I do not practice conversion therapy in any form.

What if I'm not sure it's gender dysphoria at all?

Then you are describing one of the most common starting points there is. Dysphoria overlaps with depression, anxiety, trauma responses, and ordinary self-doubt, and untangling them is careful clinical work. That untangling is a core part of what I do, and an uncertain answer at the start is not a problem.

Do you write letters supporting gender-affirming medical care?

Bring this up on the consultation call. Whether documentation makes sense depends on your situation and what a given provider requires, and I will be straightforward with you about what I can and cannot provide before you commit to anything.

I'm not out. Is this safe for me?

Yes. What you share in therapy is confidential within the limits of the law, and I explain those limits plainly in the first session. If privacy at home is a concern for online sessions, mention it on the consultation call and we will work out logistics that protect you.

Do you take insurance?

We go over rates and payment options on the free consultation call, and current details are always on my Rates & Insurance page. Many clients use HSA or FSA funds, and I can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
